\u201cAnd the Lord said unto Moses: \u2018Say unto Aaron: Take your rod and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, over their streams, and over their pools, and over their ponds of water, that they may become blood; and there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt\u2019.\u201d (Exodus 7:19)<\/p>\n

Tonight the Nile bleeds.
\nThe springs, streams, rivers, all bleed red tonight,
\nKetchup red, molasses thick.<\/p>\n

Tonight the crimsoned Nile flows
\nSlowly, like spilled honey stained with burgundy wine;
\nSlowly, like a baby\u2019s corpse sinking,
\nStinking.<\/p>\n

The Nile remembers when she had been reddened before
\nBy Jewish babies\u2019 blood.
\nWaves of mother-tears had then come to wash away,
\nDrench away,
\nThe stench and dye of baby-blood.
\nBut tonight you can See! Touch! Smell!
\nThe reek of morgues coming back
\nAs from every pipe, every faucet,
\nScarlet toothpaste oozes out;
\nAs from all the village wells
\nThe red blood
