Why would Pharoah listen to me when the Israelites wouldn’t hear a word?” God’s chosen communicator is facing a crisis of capability, knowing that the message he must deliver is strongly dependent on how well he can deliver it.

Our orator faces the following challenges:
1. Poor past performance: God entrusted Moses to convince the Israelites of God’s support, which backfires in 6:9.
2. Self-doubt: Rashi defines aral as obstructed or closed up, a speech impediment or Moses’ self-disinclination to taking the lead.
3. Vague expectations: lead to vague results. Rabbeinu Bahya explains that Moses, unsure of God’s instructions had assumed Aaron would speak.
4. Upper limiting: Moses believed that he was fundamentally flawed, unable to succeed.
5. Tough crowd!: With the Israelites’ lack of support, Moses felt that Pharaoh would also be disinclined to listen.

As public speaking is a shared global fear, I’m including a guide—Five Points for Effective Speaking (SPEAK)—which might have helped Moses prepare:

1. Start Strong: Get to your point early on: “Let my people go.” Don’t make your audience hunt for your destination, take them along on the journey.
2. Personalize: Explain how your goal impacts your audience. “Pharoah, you’ve been afraid of an uprising, let them leave—you’ll be rid of an unproductive workforce.
3. Explain/Entertain: Support your original aim, or put people at ease with a sense of levity. “You tried to kill them (and let’s face it, me too) and it didn’t go your way.”
4. Allocate Your Resources: Utilize supporters, speakers, strong precedents. Bring in physical evidence. “Have you met Aaron? He was on your workforce for years. Let him tell you about…”
5. Know Your Audience: Speak directly to your audience, including their values and pain points. With research, Moses and Aaron’s professional presence might have convinced Pharaoh outright.

If we could share these tactics with Moses, he too might learn that he need not speak just to be heard, nor stay silent just to feel
