1. Blood<\/span>
\nBlood dyes the river;
\nOn red water float dead fish,
\nDead squid, dead eels, death.<\/p>\n

2. Frogs
\n<\/span>Swarms of bull-frogs croak
\nIn stoves, cribs, latrines, coffins;
\nEven rats shudder.<\/p>\n

3. Lice
\n<\/span>Adults and children
\nScratch their heads and groins in shame
\nWhile the idols fall.<\/p>\n

4. Insects
\n<\/span>Bees and hornets sting;
\nRed ants and mosquitoes bite;
\nBedbugs rule Egypt.<\/p>\n

5. Livestock plague
\n<\/span>Stench of dead cattle
\nIn the temples of Hathor,
\nFormer cow-goddess.<\/p>\n

6. Boils<\/span>
\nBoils of pus rupture
\nOn the inflamed bodies of
\nSacred crocodiles.<\/p>\n

7. Hail<\/span>
\nSharp arrows of ice
\nIn barrage upon barrage
\nPierce pyramid walls.<\/p>\n

8. Locusts<\/span>
\nThe eye of heaven
\nBlackens as hordes of locusts
\nDevour all the green.<\/p>\n

9. Darkness<\/span>
\nIn deserted streets
\nHands of darkness suffocate
\nThe prostrate statues.<\/p>\n

10. The Slaying of the First-Born<\/span>
\nIn the golden cradle
\nOf Pharaoh\u2019s queen\u2019s first-born son,
\nOnly silence
