When Is A Name Not A Name?<\/span><\/p>\n

3:13,14 – Moses said to God, \u201cWhen I come to the Israelites and say to them, \u2018The God of your fathers has sent me to you,\u2019 and they ask me, \u2018What is His name?\u2019 what shall I say to them?\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span>And God said to Moses, \u201cEhyeh-Asher-Ehyeh<\/em>.\u201d He continued, \u201cThus shall you say to the Israelites, \u2018Ehyeh<\/em> sent me to you.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Moses throughout his life has a number of quite direct requests of God. Later on, he will ask to see God; here he just asks for a moniker. In answering, God it seems does not name Names, but rather offers a theological mystery.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our translation, the New JPS, following the Targum, treats this as a divine name, and therefore does not translate it. But it is a pretty straightforward Hebrew verb, a form of the root \u05d4-\u05d9-\u05d4, h-y-h, relating to being or existence. This is also the root of the most famous ancient Hebrew name of God, YHWH, or \u05d9-\u05d4-\u05d5-\u05d4.<\/span><\/p>\n

As we saw <\/span>in an earlier post<\/span><\/a>, while not actually a word, these four letters are taken from instances of the verb “to be.” The words for “he was” “he is” and “he will be” are \u05d4\u05d9\u05d4, \u05d4\u05d5\u05d4, \u05d9\u05d4\u05d9\u05d4, <\/span>haya, hoveh, yihyeh<\/span><\/i>, thus making the Name a sort of permutation of these forms together, implying eternity, and the oft-used translation, the Eternal.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are also other abbreviations or variations, such as Yah, the source of Rastafarian “Jah,” and Yahu, both incorporated in first and last names: Isaiah and Jeremiah both end in <\/span>\u2013yahu<\/span><\/i> in Hebrew, and of course, the surname, Netanyahu.<\/span><\/p>\n

This brings us to our verse. God tells Moses to go to the enslaved Israelites in Egypt and rouse them to freedom. Moses foresees them asking who sent him \u2013 “when they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I tell them?” \u2013 God answers: “\u05d0\u05d4\u05d9\u05d4 \u05d0\u05e9\u05e8 \u05d0\u05d4\u05d9\u05d4, <\/span>ehyeh asher ehyeh<\/span><\/em>,<\/em> which indeed can be translated as “I will be who\/what I will be\u201d or \u201cI am who\/what I am,\u201d or even, “I am who I will be,” this time implying unbounded becoming, the inability of a name to define an essence. This makes the answer a non-answer, in the sense, “don’t think that by finding out My name, you can control Me, or have special access to My nature.”<\/span><\/p>\n
