Unlike George W. Bush’s institution of the White House Hanukah party, the presidential Passover Seder was not expressly, or even primarily, celebrated for the Jewish community. The annual retelling of the Exodus at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue spoke to the Obamas’ African-American identity, who saw in it “a tale that was carried from slavery through the Civil Rights Movement into today.”

Exodus tells the particular story of a particular people, yet its message has been meaningful to a great variety of peoples seeking freedom around the world, including those who do not claim any Israelite ancestry. In the United States, the Biblical Exodus is most immediately associated with African-Americans who found inspiration in its message of hope and liberty during the crush of slavery – perhaps even more than Jews recalled it during their times of persecution. The verses of many African American spirituals were taken from the Exodus story, most famously, “Go Down, Moses.”

Like most spirituals, the precise origins of “Go Down, Moses” are lost to the steamy mists of the Southern plantations. The song did not have a specific composer in the conventional sense, but took shape communally. “Go Down, Moses” describes Egypt as depressed, echoing both God’s assurance that “I have come down to rescue the Israelites from the Egyptians and to bring them up, out of that land,” and the geography of American slavery. Remarkably, the song’s title-line takes aim at Moses, a privileged Israelite who escaped slavery and had to be convinced to go back down to Egypt to help his fellow Israelites (Exodus 3-4). It is not surprising that the song was used as code by abolitionists like Harriet Tubman seeking to free slaves, and that it was sung by Civil Rights activists who traveled down South to show solidarity with their African American brothers suffering in places like Alabama and Mississippi. “Go Down, Moses” reminds us of a particular, oft-forgotten message of the Exodus story – the need for the fortunate members of subjugated peoples to descend into the kin’s misery, and lift them up.

2019-03-26
