Many years have passed since Moses fled from Egypt, a fugitive from the law after killing an Egyptian taskmaster. He is married, has children and is quietly herding his father-in-law Jethro\u2019s sheep in the desert, and minding his own \u00a0business.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then, with no apparent warning, he sees a bush that is burning unconsumed. He takes notice, stops and makes a conscious effort to observe and understand what he is seeing (Exodus 3:2-3).<\/span><\/p>\n

God has heard the cries of the Children of Israel and looked down. At the burning bush, God\u2019s gaze crosses that of Moses. Attention, concentration and concern for detail were the threshold requirements for the mission of freeing the Israelite slaves. God has a promise to fulfill: to free the people of Israel from Egypt and bring them to the land, but God needs human agents to work in this world. We don\u2019t know how many other candidates God tried to contact. We only know that Moses passed the test.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moses is less sure, and hesitates. God gives him a pep-talk. God promises to support Moses in the task, reveals God\u2019s own name, and outlines how the campaign will progress.<\/span><\/p>\n

The negotiations between God and Moses continue into the next chapter, but it is already evident that God values Moses specifically for his attentiveness. God surely has other tasks to be done in this world.
