Once he was close enough, Elohim\/God calls out the big news to him: The God of Moses&#8217;s forefathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, is en route to free the enslaved Israelites from Egypt, and return them to their chosen homeland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moses believes the revelation, but doubts he is capable of fulfilling the mission. As part of an argumentative conversation they have, Moses requests a name for God \u2013 after all, living in a culture rife with Gods and the powers they wield, it&#8217;s important to know. And then, even though we already heard the name YHWH in this chapter, and Elohim, and the genealogical description (God of \u2026), here comes another: Eheyeh Asher Eheyeh, <\/span><b>I will be that which I will be<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Or perhaps in a form of present continuous: <\/span><b>I (always) am what I am. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or any combination of those. A name that connotes infinite independence of this God from any definition, flexibility and free choice for God. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what does this name have to do with the other three in the chapter?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A parable for the first three names: The prime minister was on the the phone, and she said: Jules, It is I, Alice, your Aunt, calling to wish you a happy Birthday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We aren&#8217;t confused: The name of the caller is Alice. Her role is Prime Minister, and her relation to Jules is Aunt. One character, different aspects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, here we read: Elohim\/ God (role) is YHWH (name), \u00a0the God of Moses&#8217;s forefathers (relation).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fourth, new, name defines the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nature<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of an unfettered God who acts freely in the world. This is the God that will now figure in their lives- God who may change, depending on God&#8217;s will alone, and cannot be controlled. God even chooses a nickname: &#8220;Say to them: Eheyeh sent me to you&#8221; (vs. 14)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eheyeh and YHWH are apparently variations of the same name; <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eheyeh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the first person (\u05d0 is the 1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> letter of the 1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> person singular in the future), is what God calls Godself; and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YHWH<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the third person (\u05d9&#8217; is 1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> letter of 3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> person singular, future), is what <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> call God.
