Among the craggy rocks I blossomed.
\n<\/span>I sheltered the serpent, the lizard, the mongoose.
\n<\/span>I shaded the hyrax
\n<\/span>chattering through my leaves.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Long before he was drawn from the river
\n<\/span>before the sea swallowed men whole
\n<\/span>before wanderers grumbled in their wavering faith
\n<\/span>I flourished.<\/span><\/p>\n

I heard the sheep approaching and ignited.
\n<\/span>A black fire<\/span>[1]<\/span> surrounded me.
\n<\/span>God only spoke to Moses, first as his father<\/span>[2]<\/span>.
\n<\/span>Amram\u2019s voice flushed up my trunk
\n<\/span>through my branches
\n<\/span>my blossoms.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Why a bush? They ask.
\n<\/span>I have been compared
\n<\/span>to Egypt<\/span>[3]
\n<\/span>written off as cramped
\n<\/span>unextraordinary.
\n<\/span>And yet,
\n<\/span>the merit of the five fathers rests upon my leaves<\/span>[4]<\/span>.
\n<\/span>The angel Michael<\/span>[5]<\/span> breathed from within my trunk.
\n<\/span>I sprouted from Horeb<\/span>[6]
\n<\/span>from holy ground.
\n<\/span>I am Sinai.<\/span>[7]
\n<\/span>I am the years of Moses\u2019 life.<\/span>[8]
\n<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

A miracle!<\/span><\/i> They said,
\n<\/span>Unconsumed.
\n<\/span>A black fire had burned within me
\n<\/span>and long after this people and their exodus
\n<\/span>long after Moses was denied his Promised Land
\n<\/span>his thirty thousand angels ascended back to heaven,<\/span>[9]
\n<\/span>my branches my blossoms my leaves all remained.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The commandment of God shook the ground as Moses bowed.
\n<\/span>And then they both left.
\n<\/span>I wonder if Moses screamed against the decision?
\n<\/span>Perhaps Moses was consumed by God.
\n<\/span>Perhaps God engulfed him in flames
\n<\/span>burying Moses\u2019 screams with the sound of His voice
\n<\/span>while Joshua bowed low to the ground hearing the voice of Nun, his father.<\/span><\/p>\n
