Moses herds his father-in-law Jethro’s flock in the desert. The Israelites, shepherd-less, groan under the yoke of slavery in Egypt. The time has come to act. To appoint a leader.<\/span><\/p>\n

God reveals Himself to Moses gradually. As Moses herds the flock in the desert God attracts his attention with an unusual sight – a desert bush “burns… but is not consumed” (3:2). When Moses approaches for a better look at this wondrous sight, God calls him: “Moses, Moses” (3:4) and presents Himself and His plan: “And He said: I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob… I have seen the poverty of My people in Egypt… and I will descend and rescue them from the hands of the Egyptians” (3:5-8). Why does God say this to Moses, of all people? Because He wants to appoint him to carry out His plan: “Now go, and I will send you to Pharaoh, and take My people the Israelites out of Egypt” (3:10).<\/span><\/p>\n

Moses refuses, both in this chapter and the next. Why?<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. The task is too great – “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and take the Israelites out of Egypt?” (3:11).<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. He’s afraid of the people’s reaction – “And when they ask me ‘what is his name?’ what shall I tell them?”<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Three more refusals await us in the next chapter, until Moses, willingly or unwillingly, accepts the mission.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Points to Ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Remove your shoes<\/b>. That famous line is from here. Verse 5.<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. A double mission<\/b>. Moses immediately realizes the double challenge the mission poses – convincing both Pharaoh and the Israelites.<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. God’s names<\/b>. The names and attributes by which God instructs Moses to introduce Him to the Israelites: “I will be that I will be” (3:14) and “God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob” (3:16).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      4. <\/span>The plan in brief<\/b>. Verses 17-22: Moses and the elders of Israel will stand before Pharaoh and ask him to grant the Israelites a temporary furlough so they can worship God in the desert. Pharaoh will refuse. God will strike. The Israelites will borrow silver and gold objects from the Egyptians so that, as in the prophetic statement to Abraham at the Covenant of the Pieces, “And then they will leave with great wealth”
