{"id":40725,"date":"2018-09-23T01:53:33","date_gmt":"2018-09-22T22:53:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=40725"},"modified":"2022-04-19T09:29:04","modified_gmt":"2022-04-19T06:29:04","slug":"milimilim-the-hebrew-corner-exodus-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/milimilim-the-hebrew-corner-exodus-1\/","title":{"rendered":"MiliMiliM &#8211; The Hebrew Corner &#8211; Exodus 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[361,372],"acf":{"old_id":"40725","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":34011,"related_cahpter":"51","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"\u05e0\u05ea\u05d7\u05db\u05de\u05d4 - Nitchakmah - Let us deal shrewdly\r\n\r\n","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ex 9-10: And [Pharaoh] said to his people, \u201cLook, the Israelite people are much too numerous for us. &#8220;<em>Hava nitchakmah<\/em>&#8221; Let us deal shrewdly with them, so that they may not increase\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this chapter we have an example of a perfectly \u201cnormal\u201d root &#8211; <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ch-ch-m<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; with meanings connected to wisdom, that appears here in a surprising form. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Chacham<\/em> is a sage or wise person, familiar from the first son of the four of the Pesach seder. The prototypical <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chachamim<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were the rabbis of antiquity, the &#8220;sages of blessed memory,&#8221; known in Hebrew as \u05d7\u05d6&#8221;\u05dc, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chazal<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But anybody can be considered wise, who possesses the quality of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chochmah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cwisdom\u201d This is the first element of the triad of \u201cchabad\u201d &#8211; <em>chochmah, binah <\/em>and <em>da\u2019at<\/em>, wisdom, understanding and knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Talmudic text &#8220;The Ethics of the Fathers&#8221; asks the question <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eyzehu chacham<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? &#8220;Who is wise?&#8221; Their answer isn&#8217;t about high achievers in the wisdom acquisition category, but an almost moral category of how the truly wise relate to others. They answer: &#8220;Who is wise? One who learns from all people&#8221; (4:1).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word used here to describe how Pharaoh decided to deal with the Israelites is not exactly a paragon of that sort of wisdom. The form <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hitchakem<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has two basic meanings, each \u00a0a perversion of wisdom. One is to be the opposite of &#8220;a wise person,&#8221; which in English we would call &#8220;a wise guy.&#8221; For instance, in the book of Ecclesiastes, there is sage advice given: \u201cdon\u2019t overdo goodness and don\u2019t <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>titchakem<\/em> <\/span><b>act the wise man <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to excess\u201d (7:16). In modern Hebrew we might call someone who wasn\u2019t wise but was being (or \u201ccracking\u201d) wise a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chochmalog<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, adding a sort of academic suffix, as if to say that the wise guy is so smart that he has a degree in &#8220;chochmalogy.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pharaoh, of course, wasn\u2019t \u201cwising off\u201d to the Israelites, he was being wise in the sense of crafty or cunning. He was being Machiavellian three millennia before Machiavelli. As he says \u201c<em>hava nitchkmah<\/em>\u201d \u201clet us be sneaky and shrewd,\u201d one can almost see him rubbing his hands together with the \u201cmu-ha-ha\u201d evil laugh, as he lays his evil schemes.
