What would you like to watch tonight? A heart-rending drama, or a hysterical comedy? According to Genesis, the answer is clear: the tears beat out the laughs, by a long-shot.<\/p>\n

There are 14 instances of weeping over the course of the book’s 50 chapters, as compared with only 3 of laughter. And no, we are not counting those who “metzachek” (a word with sexual connotations \u2013 see Gen 26:8) \u2013 that belongs to a different film genre, for adults only.<\/p>\n

Whoever still wants to have a few laughs, just know that they come with a sort of traveler’s warning from God, like: “Why did Sarah laugh!?”<\/p>\n

And if you thought that Genesis is especially stingy with laughter and zany antics, well, not really. If you search for laughs in the rest of the Tanakh, you might end up in tears. The word “laugh\/laughter” in the lighter sense, doesn’t appear even once in the rest of the Tanakh. We couldn’t even find a smile.<\/p>\n

And if we’re on the subject of feelings, it’s worth noting that Genesis mentions eight characters who are loved, and only four who are hated. But if you read the whole book, with all its plot twists, intrigues, and vendettas, could justifiably reach the conclusion that in this case \u2013 the table is very misleading.<\/p>\n
