Knowing where we came from is an essential part of understanding where we are going. Knowing who we used to be helps us understand what we are meant to become. It’s no accident that Exodus begins the way it does: with a short historical record of the wanderings of Israel’s children from the Levant to Egypt, and the family names of those who settled there. Almost immediately, the Torah juxtaposes this historical memory with the forgetfulness of Egypt’s king. It’s not hard to imagine him asking a rhetorical question which frames the entire book: “what good is history anyway?”

The king did not know Joseph. Can it be that Joseph was forgotten over time? That nobody remembered the famine, or the rationing, or the strange story of dream interpretation? It seems unlikely. This king has a new agenda, one which is willfully ignorant of the past. Closing his eyes to the contributions of Joseph and his people, he envisions them as a threat to his power. If it is inconvenient to him, he imagines that he can rewrite history. He attempts to do so through a systematic campaign of oppression.

How should we respond when history is forgotten, revised, and co-opted as a tool of hate or oppression? In a TED talk that she gave in April of 2017 about her famous trial against the holocaust denier David Irving, the historian Deborah Lipstadt said: “Truth is not relative…When someone makes an outrageous claim… we must say to them, ‘Where’s the proof? Where’s the evidence?’ We must hold their feet to the fire. We must not treat it as if their lies are the same as the facts.”

As the king of Egypt and the Israelites themselves find out over the course of this book, the facts of history have a stubborn way of coming back to the surface. Even when we try to forget it, it is always with us. If we hope to make any progress, then we cannot allow the past to slip into oblivion. Understanding history and coming to terms with it is our only option.

jud2-hourglass
