50:15 – When Joseph\u2019s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, \u201cWhat if Joseph still bears a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrong <\/span>asher gamalnu <\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/em>that we did him!\u201d
\n<\/span>17: So shall you say to Joseph, \u2018Forgive, I urge you, the offense and guilt of your brothers <\/span>ki ra’ah gemaluch<\/em> <\/span>who treated you so harshly.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

From the above examples and their translations, we might think that the words \u201cgamlanu\/ gemaluch<\/em>,\u201d from the root \u05d2-\u05de-\u05dc, g-m-l<\/em>, means simply doing something to someone, to treat them in a particular way. But the root <\/span>g<\/span>–<\/span>m<\/span>–<\/span>l<\/span><\/em> denotes something like \u201crequite\u201d or \u201crecompense,\u201d an action, positive or negative, that comes as a response. So the brothers here seem to be actually subtly admitting that they indeed treated Joseph badly in response to Joseph\u2019s behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are actually three different <\/span>g<\/span>–<\/span>m<\/span>–<\/span>l<\/span><\/em> roots. The first refers to a camel, from whose shape we also get the third letter of the Hebrew alphabet, gimel<\/em>. The second relates to the Hebrew <\/span>gamar<\/span><\/em>, “finished,” gives us<\/span> gemila<\/span><\/em>, meaning “weaned from,” and refers to anything from weaning and \u00a0toilet training to rehabilitation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The third root is the one used in this chapter, and gives us all kinds of positive things, including <\/span>gemilut chassadim<\/span><\/em>, “acts of loving kindness,” <\/span>birkat hagomel<\/span><\/em>, “the blessing for receiving divine generosity or grace” and <\/span>gimla’ot<\/span><\/em>, “retirement,” receiving one’s just due after a long life of hard work. In general there is a sense of reciprocity involved, as in the modern football (soccer), \u201c<\/span>mischak gomlin<\/span><\/em>,\u201d <\/span><\/i>a return game.<\/span><\/p>\n

But it also can mean a negative or punishing consequence, as above, or as in the military \u201cpe\u2019ulat tagmul<\/em>\u201d – retaliatory action.
