Joseph dies. The Book of Genesis ends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacob dies (Genesis 49:33 and 50:1). \u00a0In keeping with his request, he will be buried in the Cave of Machpelah, but due to Joseph\u2019s status in Egypt he gets not only his wish fulfilled but also a royal burial that includes embalming according to Egyptian custom and an impressive funeral procession (verses 3-13).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacob\u2019s death causes old fears to resurface among the brothers which indicates to us and to Joseph that they do not believe in the pardon Joseph gave them in the previous chapters. \u00a0\u201cWhen Joseph\u2019s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, \u2018What if Joseph still bears a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrong that we did him!\u2019\u201d (verse 15). Joseph is sorry to hear this and is adamant about his perspective on his life story: \u00a0\u201cBesides, although you intended me harm, God intended it for good, so as to bring about the present result\u2014the survival of many people\u201d (verse 20).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the eve of his death, Joseph leaves his brothers and the entire family that is going to settle in Egypt an important message along with a request for burial in Canaan: \u00a0When God has taken notice of you, you shall carry up my bones from here\u201d (verse 25). With the promise that the Egyptian exile, which will become Egyptian bondage in the next chapter (the next book), will come to an end, we finish the Book of Genesis and go to the Book of Exodus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Points to Ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"direction: ltr;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Egyptian burial customs: \u00a0Jacob and Joseph both merit an Egyptian embalming. \u00a0Embalming (the preservation of the body) continues according to verse 3 for 40 days. \u00a0The official royal mourning lasts 70 days, not inconsequential.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two stages in Jacob\u2019s funeral procession. \u00a0Up to Goren ha-Atad (an unidentifiable place on the other side of the Jordan; see verse 10) with an extended delegation that includes \u201cchariots, too, and horsemen\u201d (verse 9). \u00a0From there to the Cave of Machpelah with a more intimate delegation of family \u201cis sons carried him to the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah\u201d (verse 13).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A prophetic look. \u00a0As with Jacob at the end of his life (in the previous chapter), Joseph departs from this world with a prophetic message. \u00a0Although life in Egypt now is by choice, getting to Canaan will require God\u2019s intervention which will come at the right time. \u00a0\u201cGod will surely take notice of you and bring you up from this land to the land that He promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.\u201d (verse 24).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span
