{"id":40481,"date":"2018-09-18T10:11:18","date_gmt":"2018-09-18T07:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=40481"},"modified":"2022-04-12T18:18:02","modified_gmt":"2022-04-12T15:18:02","slug":"chapter-49-summary-jacobs-blessings-to-his-sons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/chapter-49-summary-jacobs-blessings-to-his-sons\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 49 Summary: Jacob\u2019s Blessings to his Sons"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":50634,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[],"acf":{"old_id":"40481","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":false,"related_cahpter":"49","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"","content":"<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Close to his death, Jacob gathers his sons \u201cCome together that I may tell you what is to befall you in days to come.\u201d (verse 1). \u00a0He turns to each one of his sons and gives a messages that sometimes is a curse, but more often is a blessing, and almost always is a look into the future to life in the Land of Israel as tribes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The messages to the sons sound very much like a poem, with rhythm, flowery language, imagery, mostly from the animal world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The order in which Jacob turns to each son is arranged according to their mothers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"direction: ltr;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leah\u2019s sons: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Zebulun, and Issachar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0Zilpah and Bilhah\u2019s sons together: \u00a0Dan, Gad, Asher, Naphtali.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0Last but not least, Rachel\u2019s sons: \u00a0Joseph and Benjamin.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Points to Ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"direction: ltr;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Settling scores. With Reuben (verse 4) apparently for the inappropriate relations he had with Bilhah; and with Simeon and Levi (verses 5-7) for their violent behavior.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sons, the tribes and their portions in the Land of Israel. \u00a0Simeon and Levi &#8211; &#8220;I will divide them in Jacob, Scatter them in Israel&#8221; (verse 7). Levi &#8211; a tribe without a portion in the Land. Simeon &#8211; a tribe whose inheritance is incorporated into the territory of Judah. Zebulun &#8211; &#8220;shall dwell by the seashore; He shall be a haven for ships, And his flank shall rest on Sidon&#8221; (verse 13); his portion is on the northern coastal plain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leadership. Judah receives the promise of eternal leadership &#8211; &#8220;The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler\u2019s staff from between his feet&#8221; (verse 10).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ben Porat Yosef. \u00a0The source of this expression, which is a common last name in Israel, is the blessing of Joseph, &#8220;Joseph is a wild ass, A wild ass by a spring&#8221; (verse 22), and its meaning apparently is a blessed son as a fruitful branch growing near the water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animals and symbols. The animals in the messages (blessings) and others, too, became symbols of the tribes and from there became symbols of several local councils in Israel.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
