Jacob, the father, right before he dies asks his sons to gather beside him and hear their future, \u201cwhat is to befall you in days to come\u201d (Genesis 49:1). Who wouldn\u2019t be moved by such a gesture? A magician at home, a fortune teller. Who would not want to hear something about his future, on how the continuation of his life, his and his descendants\u2019? Who would not want to stand alert and excited at this kind of show?<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">But when Jacob begins to talk, what a disappointment! Reuben is rebuked harshly for his past deeds. Simeon and Levi, he curses for their past deeds, and for the rest of his children, he does not say anything about the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Jacob tells them mainly about their present, about they themselves are, about their deep character, and compares their portion to animals (an ox and lion, a snake, a donkey, and a deer).<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cDad!!,\u201d their eyes glimmering in confusion, pain, and disappointment, \u201cyou promised us a fortune telling, not a zoo!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Our Sages, too, also are troubled by the gap between his promise to tell the end of days and his actual words. From here they infer \u201cJacob sought to reveal to his sons the end of days but the Divine Presence departed from him\u201d (Pesachim 56a).<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">But perhaps Jacob, nevertheless, reveals the end.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The end, so he says between the lines, is that one does not seek in the future. One\u2019s search should not focus on the end but on the present. What will happen to you in the future is derived from what you are now, your character, your behavior in life, your skills and your abilities. This is the present.
