Jacob, as only Jacob knows how, prepares well (we have already seen this in the meeting between him and his brother Esau). This is what Jacob says to his son Joseph: \u201cNow I can die, having seen for myself that you are still alive\u201d (Genesis 46:30), a statement that he made in their emotional reunion and that prepares Joseph for his father\u2019s death. In this way, the biblical writer \u201cissued\u201d an official announcement of the imminent death of father of the nation, when he said, \u201cWhen the time approached for Israel to die\u201d (Genesis 47:29). This is the background to Jacob\u2019s request of Joseph to bury him in the burial place of his ancestors. Likewise, Jacob\u2019s death is announced when he says \u201cI am about to die\u201d (Genesis 48:21) after he blessed his grandchildren, the sons of Joseph.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Even now in Genesis Chapter 49, with astonishing lucidity, after he makes sure to say goodbye to each and every one of his sons and gives precise instructions one more time about his burial arrangements, and while they surround his death bed and accompany him in his last moments, he patiently lies down in bed, seeking the most fitting and comfortable position in which to die, \u201cbreathes his last\u201d before their tearful eyes, like Abraham and Isaac his forefathers before him. However, unlike their deaths where it says explicitly that Abraham and Isaac \u201cbreathed their last, \u201cdied,\u201d and \u201cwere gathered to their people,\u201d the word \u201cdeath\u201d or \u201cdied\u201d is missing from the description of Jacob\u2019s last moments: \u201cHe drew his feet into the bed and, breathing his last, he was gathered to his people\u201d (Genesis 49:33).
