Both Jan Victors&#8217; painting (c.1635) and Owen Jones&#8217; illustration portray a reclining Jacob whose hands stretch forward to bless his grandchildren, while their father, Joseph, looks on. The artists, though, differ in their rendering of the garb and age of Joseph&#8217;s sons and the positioning of Jacob&#8217;s hands. These choices reflect varying interpretations of both textual and larger conceptual issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-40426\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/uploads\/2018\/09\/G48-1-293x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/G48-1-293x300.jpg 293w, https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/G48-1-410x420.jpg 410w, https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/G48-1.jpg 586w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victors dresses Jacob and family in contemporary garb. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-40427\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/uploads\/2018\/09\/G48-2-300x237.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/G48-2-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/G48-2.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jones, on the other hand, portrays Joseph and his sons in Egyptian garments and accessories. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This relates to a question regarding Joseph&#8217;s religious outlook after being sold. Did he raise his sons according to the customs of Jacob and his ancestors or were they assimilated into Egyptian culture and society? What about Joseph himself? To what extent had he acculturated?
