In the era of Stav Shaffir in which we live (Stav Shaffir is the youngest female Knesset member in Israel’s history, outspoken for demanding fiscal oversight and supporting a wide array of social justice-related issues), the second half of our chapter is not a pleasant section to read. Joseph exploits the economic distress of the years of famine to nationalize all of Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\n

Guy Rolnik, a Deputy Publisher of the Haaretz daily newspaper, would not have allowed Joseph to evade his pen\u2019s penetrating editorial about the Egyptian Pharaoh\u2019s fortune, and rightly so. When the Egyptians ask Joseph for bread, Joseph demands in return all cattle and sheep and then all the lands of Egypt. The Egyptians have no choice but to sell their souls in order to survive the years of famine.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch stirred uneasily when he came to this chapter and gives an apologetic answer that it was not Joseph who came up with this idea, but rather the Egyptians themselves, when they suggested: “Take us and our land in exchange for bread” (Genesis 47:19). \u00a0Joseph settled for land taxes without turning everyone into slaves. In general, Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch in his commentary to this chapter turns out to be a man with social sensitivity. <\/span><\/p>\n

In Egypt during the years of the famine, notes Rabbi Hirsch, all the lands belonged to Pharaoh except for the land of the priests that remained in their hands. In contrast, in the Israelite kingdom all the lands belonged to the tribes with the exception of the priests who had no property. “Their entire existence,” says Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch about Israelite priests, “depended on the good will of each individual and the respect he accorded them.” \u00a0It is a system where the leadership depends on the public’s appreciation and not one where the public is dependent on the generosity of the
