When famine came, Joseph charged money for the grain he gave to the people. Then, when the people ran out of money, Joseph accepted their cattle for grain. Then when their cattle ran out, Joseph accepted the land and the people, themselves, as serfs. Still, Joseph, under authority of the Pharaoh, gave grain to the people to plant and harvest. The people kept four fifths of what they produced and gave one fifth back to Pharaoh. And the people declared, \u201cYou have saved our lives! We are grateful to my lord, and we shall be serfs to Pharaoh.\u201d All that they had to eat came from Pharaoh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joseph instructed Pharaoh and the people what to do. Through his decisions, he kept the people fed and Egypt enriched. This image depicts Joseph as the teacher or professor explaining the famine survival plan. It also reflects basic economics, an exchange of one thing for another. The people need food. They give Joseph goods in exchange for food. But the famine is so prolonged that the people go bankrupt and sell themselves into serfdom to survive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>image:\u00a0 courtesy of the
