Thus Jacob and all his offspring with him came to Egypt\u201d (Genesis 46:5-6). \u00a0They leave willingly and ostensibly under happy circumstances: The family reunion with Joseph after many hard years and the solution to the hunger crisis. However, the revelation of God to Jacob in a dream opens for us a window into what is happening inside him: \u201cFear not to go down to Egypt, for I will make you there into a great nation. I Myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I Myself will also bring you back\u201d (verses 3-4).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With joy and concern, Jacob\u2019s entire family goes down to Egypt (the chapter counts and lists everyone). \u00a0Seventy people (not including women) all together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once they arrive in Goshen (verse 28), Joseph goes out to greet them. \u00a0The meeting between Jacob and Joseph is emotional, as expected. \u201cHe presented himself to him and, embracing him around the neck, he wept on his neck a good while.\u201d (verse 29), but it is told to us in abridged form, and immediately afterwards, Joseph turns to technical matters and instructs his brothers what to say and what not to say to Pharaoh so that the result of the conversation will be permission to dwell in Goshen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Points to Ponder:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacob-Israel. \u00a0These two names appear in the chapter in a confusing manner. \u00a0Take, for example, verse 8: \u201cThese are the names of the Israelites (alternatively, \u2018the sons of Israel,\u2019 Jacob and his descendants, who came to Egypt. Jacob\u2019s first-born Reuben.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seventy. \u00a0Seventy people is the number of people in Jacob\u2019s family. It is a round number. It is whole, elegant, and conveys the message that this is a blessed family.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goshen. \u00a0What is this area and why is Joseph so interested in dwelling specifically there? \u00a0It is common to identify Goshen as the area near the Delta. It is suitable for grazing and is not exactly the center of the city, allowing for Jacob\u2019s family to live separate from everyone else.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeing Joseph and dying. \u00a0This is, in fact, Jacob\u2019s wish. \u00a0From his perspective, this is the climax. \u00a0\u201cNow I can die, having seen for myself that you are still alive.\u201d (verse 30).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":86314,"id":86314,"title":"Points to
