Joseph is a living dead, a living person considered dead. Years pass, Jacob refuses to be comforted, he feels the life that is beating secretly, behind the fictitious story of death.

When he finds out (at the end of the previous chapter) “My son Joseph is still alive” (Genesis 45:28), the news almost kills him: “His heart went numb” (Genesis 45:26). “My son Joseph is still alive” he repeats again as if he he cannot believe it: “I must go and see him before I die” (Genesis 45:28). In Beer Sheva, the edge of the land of Canaan, God appears to him with a suspicious formula: “‘Jacob! Jacob!’ He answered, ‘Here.’” (Genesis 46:2). There, in the Akedah, the Binding of Isaac, (Genesis 22:1 “He said to him, ‘Abraham,’ and he answered, ‘Here I am’”) it was a death notice: “Take your son” (Genesis 22:2). Here it is news about life: The son who was considered dead who is granted him anew, is alive. With a comforting look at what will happen at the time of his death, Jacob is told “and Joseph’s hand shall close your eyes” (Genesis 46:4).

Life and death wind around each other also in the intensity of the actual meeting between father and son “he presented himself to him and, embracing him around the neck, he wept on his neck a good while.” (Genesis 46:29). Who is the one who is doing the seeing, who falls, who cries? If it is Joseph, as the subject of the sentence seems to indicate, this is a moment, again, that contains life and death, movement and paralysis: Joseph is the active one, the one embracing, crying, and Jacob is the one paralyzed, stunned, frozen in place. When Jacob regains his senses and manages to speak, he again ties his death with Joseph’s life: “Then Israel said to Joseph, ‘Now I can die, having seen for myself that you are still alive.’” (Genesis 26:30).

As in the Akedah, so too, here, at the living moment of the encounter, a hidden death is concealed: the beginning of the exile to Egypt.
