One can certainly understand them. At this moment, it becomes clear to them that the belligerent vizier who abused them in the last chapters is the brother that they nearly killed a few years ago. Who knows what their fate will be now? However Joseph hurries to placate them: “Now, do not be distressed or reproach yourselves because you sold me hither; it was to save life that God sent me ahead of you” (verse 5). From his standpoint, his being sold into slavery by his brothers was part of a divine plan that brought Joseph to where he is at the moment so that he can save and bring back to life Egypt and all the surrounding areas during the years of famine.

Joseph asks his brothers to bring his father from Canaan to Egypt. They leave on their way with many wagons (Egyptian equipment as a gift from Pharaoh) to help with the move and with the explicit request from Joseph regarding the family dynamics: “Do not be quarrelsome on the way” (verse 24).

Jacob gets very excited and finds it hard to believe: “Enough!” said Israel. “My son Joseph is still alive!
