Art by Willem de Poorter,James Tissot, and Arent de Gelder, all illustrate the moving scene of Judah’s impassioned speech on behalf of Benjamin. The artists differ both in their choice of which characters to include and in how they depict those characters, allowing for different readings of both Judah and Joseph and, thus, of the reconciliation as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n

De Gelder<\/span><\/p>\n

Both De Poorter and De Gelder portray Judah in a posture of submission, kneeling before Joseph. Moreover, De Gelder’s Judah is clearly distressed. His face is pained, and one can almost hear him imploring Joseph. <\/span><\/p>\n

Tissot’s Judah, in contrast, does not give off the same feeling of subservience or desperate beseeching. He sits on the floor, seemingly unruffled, counting on his fingers as he speaks and states his arguments:<\/span><\/p>\n

What do we know of the emotions of Judah as described in Tanakh? Does he stand meek and pleading before Judah, hoping to earn his compassion as he speaks of his elderly father? Or is he confident in the innocence of Benjamin, and thus able to speak to Joseph more as an equal? Perhaps one might go even further, and suggest that Judah is aware of Joseph’s role in the framing, and, as such, stands before him defiant and accusatory. <\/span><\/p>\n
