The three pictures displayed here, the engraving from the LaHaye Bible, Alexander Ivanov’s painting, and the illustration from the Mortier Bible, all portray one of the most critical junctures of the Joseph narratives, the moment when Joseph’s cup is found in Benjamin’s sack. The artists differ in their depiction of Benjamin, Joseph’s servants, and the silver goblet, and their contrasting perspectives reflect some of the ambiguities in the story of Genesis 44.<\/span><\/p>\n

The artists’ choices reflect certain ambiguities in the Biblical text and different possible interpretive stances, including around Benjamin\u2019s age.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Ivanov’s painting above, Benjamin is depicted as a young boy, not yet a teenager.<\/span><\/p>\n

Likewise, Benjamin is a child in the LaHaye Bible etching:<\/span><\/p>\n

In Mortier’s Bible, in contrast, he is portrayed as an adult. How old was Benjamin at this point in the narrative? Was he significantly younger than his brothers?<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the story, the brothers continuously refer to Benjamin as their “little” brother and Yaakov, too, seems to treat him as a child, leading the reader to view him as such.<\/span> On the other hand, Benjamin was born when Jacob was on his way back to Hebron, at some point before Joseph was sold into slavery. This would make him at least in his mid-twenties when our story takes place.<\/span> The exact age difference between him and his brothers, though, is unknown, as the chronology of both their births and the events that take place after Jacob’s return to Israel is murky.<\/span><\/p>\n
