Benjamin, whose safe return is thrust on their shoulders, is with them. Simeon is released. It is now possible to breathe and to return home peacefully.

However, Joseph has other plans. He orders that the money is put back into the brothers’ bags and to plant his personal silver goblet in Benjamin’s bag. “They had just left the city and had not gone far” (Verse 4) and Joseph sends his steward to chase after them for having stolen his goblet. The brothers are convinced of their innocence and offer “Whichever of your servants it is found with shall die; the rest of us, moreover, shall become slaves to my lord.” (verse 9). Then, Judah offers the speech of a lifetime (the most dramatic speech of the entire Book of Genesis), a speech whose purpose is to convince the tyrannical vizier not to take Benjamin as a slave and to return Benjamin to his father at home as Judah had promised to do.

Judah mentions the events through the lens of the pain of his elderly father who has already lost one beloved son and will not be able to endure another tragedy “For how can I go back to my father unless the boy is with me?
