43:10- For we could have been there and back twice <\/span>lulei hitmahmahnu<\/span><\/em> if we had not dawdled.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A short essay on a long word. The word <\/span>hitmahmeha<\/span><\/em> is a word one can linger over, especially since that is what it means: dawdle, delay, tarry. Might that suggest an onomatopoeic origin? Or is it a Hawaiian borrowing? (That\u2019s a joke – it just looks like a Polynesian type collection of vowels). <\/span><\/p>\n

It is listed as coming from a four-letter root (those are relatively uncommon) that would be \u05de\u05d4\u05de\u05d4, <\/span>m-h-m-h<\/span><\/em>. This is probably unrelated to another word in our chapter that seems similar, though (both in sound structure and possible semantic connections): <\/span>vayitmehu<\/span><\/em>, \u201c<\/span><\/i>the men looked at one another in astonishment\u201d (v. 33), which comes from the root \u05ea-\u05de-\u05d4, <\/span>t-m-h<\/span><\/em> – \u201csurprise, bewilderment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But if you\u2019re familiar with the Pesach seder, you know this word from two other contexts: matzah and messiah. The reason given for hastily making unleavened bread was that they had to beat it out of Egypt, and couldn\u2019t <\/span>lehitmahameha<\/span><\/em>, tarry there.
