Jacob was extremely anxious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, when the danger of hunger threatens to annihilate the entire family, Judah presents himself to Jacob and says: There is no choice. \u201cSend the boy in my care\u201d (verse 8) and \u201cI myself will be surety for him; you may hold me responsible\u201d (verse 9).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacob\u2019s sons, this time including Benjamin, go down to Egypt equipped with two sets of gifts and money&#8211;that which was returned to them the last time and additional money for the purchase of food. \u00a0They are welcomed in Egypt warmly, which includes allaying their fears around the mystery of the money that had been returned to them, \u201cAll is well with you; do not be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, must have put treasure in your bags for you. I got your payment\u201d (verse 23) and the reunion of the brothers with Simeon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joseph gets very excited seeing his younger brother Benjamin, the son of his mother Rachel. \u00a0He cries (alone) but in the presence of his brothers he keeps his composure until&#8230;Chapter 45.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Points to Ponder:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gift offering: \u00a0Jacob sends with his sons a gift \u201cchoice products of the land\u201d (verse 11) that includes \u201csome balm and some honey, gum, ladanum, pistachio nuts, and almond\u201d (ibid.), i.e. different delicacies, perfumes, and medical supplies that evidently were not part of Egypt\u2019s domestic product. \u00a0How does one know this? Joseph, as you recall, went down to Egypt with \u201ca caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, their camels bearing gum, balm, and ladanum to be taken to Egypt.\u201d (Genesis 37:25).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bowing down: \u00a0The dream is coming true. Joseph\u2019s brothers, including Benjamin, bow down to him twice, in verse 26 and verse 28.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food, closeness, and status: \u00a0Food plays a key role in this chapter. \u00a0The gift offering (which they bring to the vizier), the invitation to lunch (verse 16), the bread (the meal), which is eaten separate from the Egyptians in the palace for ethnic reasons (verse 32), and the imbibing together (verse 34) represent the pinnacle of closeness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A moment of wonder: Verse 33. The vizier (Joseph) knows how to arrange the seating of the brothers by their birth order. \u00a0You, the reader, know how he knows, but the brothers do not. \u201cThe men looked at one another in astonishment.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gifts with no limit. Joseph gives his brothers gifts. To Benjamin he gives five times the amount he gave everyone else (verse 34). \u00a0In Jacob\u2019s family, one never conceals the hierarchy of
