In the Book of Genesis, there is no mercy, or at least not the word “mercy” until Jacob’s prayer to his sons before their second time going down to Egypt: “And may El Shaddai dispose the man to mercy toward you” (Genesis 43:14). Where is the mercy? Why is it being revealed only now? Without mercy is it possible for the world to exist?

It seems that the Tanakh is teaching that it is not enough for God’s mercy or mercy in general to remain only with God (a paraphrase of Yehudah Amichai’s poem “God Full of Mercy” where he accuses God of hogging all the available mercy for Himself). Mercy must be embodied on the human level and must be taught from someone whose soul vacillates between mercy and justice, someone who, throughout his life, grapples with real life dilemmas that range from kindness to heroism. Someone who has not experienced personally the terror of justice can neither appreciate mercy nor bestow it on someone else.

Jacob, the innocent tent-dwelling man, inherited his sharp senses from his mother Rebekah and uncle Laban. He understands correctly that his sons are not innocent and that they will not survive in Egypt based on justice alone, and therefore his prayer is that mercy will be found in the Egyptian tyrant’s heart. And Joseph does not disappoint. He, too, as someone who moves from justice to mercy, understands that without mercy the story cannot continue, that justice can often deeply engrain the pain and injustice and even aggravate them. “With that, Joseph hurried out, for he was overcome with feeling (alternatively, mercy) toward his brother ” (Genesis 43:3). Joseph has mercy, and thanks to his mercy, the story continues.

Only those who have mercy in their heart, even though they have experienced harsh justice, will continue the story of humanity where the image of God resides, God who responds to Moses’s question about God’s presence saying: “and I will proclaim before you the name Lord, and the grace that I grant and the compassion (mercy) that I show.” (Exodus 33:19).

2019-03-05
