The present chapter recounts how Jacob\u2019s sons argued with him to allow Benjamin to accompany them on a return trip to Egypt to replenish their provisions. In the process, they rehash details of their initial encounter with Joseph, to whom they refer only as \u201cThe Man\u201d (<\/span>ha\u2019ish<\/span><\/i>). Now that their supplies have run out, they are anxious to make another trip lest they and their families die of starvation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two particular items are noted here. First, given that\u2014in toto\u2014some of the brothers will have made three round trips to Egypt in a relatively brief time span, the distance from Canaan could not have been all that great. Bear this in mind when approaching Exodus 15:1 that informs us that God did not lead the Jews out of Egypt via the Land of the Philistines \u201cin spite of its proximity.\u201d The enormity of the consequences of the sin of the scouts (Numbers 13) is amplified if we reflect on the fact that the journey that took them forty years could really have been completed in a matter of days.<\/span><\/p>\n

The second item of note is why Jacob allowed Judah\u2019s pledge to stand surety for Benjamin (<\/span>e`ervenu<\/span><\/em>, v. 9) to overcome his anxiety over his separation from this last vestige of his beloved Rachel. To get the answer, we have to recall when Judah got his comeuppance in the matter of Tamar. (See my elaboration in Chapter 38: \u201cWhat Goes Around<\/a>\u201d) In order to win her favors, he had deposited his staff and seal with her as surety (`<\/em><\/span>eiravon<\/span><\/em>, <\/em>38:18) for an eventual payment. When he attempted to redeem his pledge, Tamar was not to be found, but the mere fact that he kept his word\u2014in spite of its potentially embarrassing consequences for him\u2014may have reinforced his credibility in this instance,
