Only by procuring rations from Egypt will Jacob\u2019s family survive famine. Joseph, viceroy of Egypt, insists that the brothers will receive no more rations unless they return with their youngest brother, Benjamin. Yet Jacob is reluctant to send the lad, for fear that calamity may strike him along the journey. So Judah must persuade Jacob to reconsider.<\/span><\/p>\n

He does so in a way that is remarkably repetitive. Thus, for instance, Judah opens his appeal with a double formulation (\u201cthe man warned us, yea, he warned us\u201d); recalls Joseph\u2019s demand (\u201cyou shall not see my face if your brother is not with you\u201d); and reiterates that demand, verbatim, two verses later, after yet another double formulation (\u201cthe man asked us, yea, he had asked us\u201d). Judah then reformulates, yet a third time, the import of this demand, both in the affirmative and the negative: <\/span>\u201cIf you send our brother with us, we can go down and buy food for you\/ but if you do not send him, we cannot go down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, Judah employs no less than five coupled phrases as he seeks to assuage Jacob\u2019s lingering fears: \u201cSend the lad with me, and we will get up\/ and we will go, and we will live\/ and we will not die, both we\/ and also you\/ and also our young children. I will guarantee him\/ from my hand you can demand him. If I do not bring him to you\/ and stand him up before you, I will have sinned against you forever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Judah realizes the situation is urgent; he himself notes, ironically, that \u201chad we not delayed, we could have been there and back twice.\u201d Yet he also recognizes that he cannot, nor should not, force his father into a decision of this magnitude. Jacob needs time: time to review his options, and to let his emotions catch up with where his head must already recognize it has to go.<\/span><\/p>\n

That is what Judah gives him. Instead of trying to speed things up, he slows them down. Lovingly, painstakingly, he repeats himself once, and then a second time, as he helps his father return, point by point, over every detail of the daunting dilemma that lays before him. Though to Judah the path forward seems clear, and he continues to advocate for it, he nonetheless demonstrates, through his patience, that Jacob\u2019s concerns are wholly valid, and worthy of extended discussion. This is, after all, not Judah\u2019s decision to make, but Jacob\u2019s; and, by granting Jacob the honor of talking it out, Judah shows his father that he is willing to take however long he must to assist him in finding the courage to make the right call on his own.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":103703,"id":103703,"title":"-624b4db970be7--624b4db970be8gen43-jacob
