Jacob sends his sons to Egypt to purchase food. However, he does not send everyone. He keeps back Benjamin, the one sone who remains from Rachel “since he feared that he might meet with disaster” (Genesis 42:4).

Joseph recognizes his brothers. They, however, do not recognize that the vizier (verse 6) standing in front of them as their brother whom they sold as a slave approximately 20 years earlier (Joseph’s rise to power is still hard to imagine). “Recalling the dreams that he had dreamed about them,” (verse 9), Joseph begins to work to actualize them.

He accuses them of being spies in Egypt and is prepared to clear them of their guilt only if they can proved that they have spoken the truth. Indeed, if their story proves true, i.e. that they have a younger brother who has remained in Canaan (as they told him in the initial interrogation), they must prove it. He imprisons the brothers in a “guardhouse” (verse 17), a jail, for three days, and afterwards offers as a compromise that one of the brothers should remain as a hostage in jail until the other brothers bring their younger brother to Egypt.

The difficult crisis in which the brothers find themselves arouses among them memories of the past which are accompanied by heavy feelings of guilt: “Alas, we are guilty on account of our brother, because we looked on at his anguish, yet paid no heed as he pleaded with us. That is why this distress has come upon us.” (verse 21).

The conversation, which the brothers think is just among themselves, is understood also by Joseph, because the language they speak is Joseph’s native language. “He turned away from them and wept” (verse 24).

Simeon remains in the jail in Egypt. The other brothers leave for their journey with heavy bags and ostensibly with a heavy heart too. When the bags are opened, a disturbing surprise is discovered–the money they had paid for the produce had been placed in their bags. We know that Joseph is responsible for this. It is reasonable to assume that the brothers also suspect that the Egyptian vizier is responsible for this matter as part of a frame up that he fabricated against them and which causes them great anxiety.

The brothers arrive home without Simeon and with a commitment to bring Benjamin to the vizier of Egypt.
