Joseph remembered his dreams (42:9). This phrase \u201cand X remembered y\u201d appears three other times in Genesis (8:1; 19:29 and 30;22) and is intended to let readers know not just that there is memory, but there is action. In the other three instances, God is doing the remembering and remembers Noah to make the waters of the flood recede, Abraham to save his nephew Lot in Sodom and Rachel to open her womb and enable her to have a child. Remembrance is <\/span>not<\/span><\/i> just a thought, it involves tangible \u00a0action.<\/span><\/p>\n

So when readers see that Joseph, following this well-established pattern of remembering for action, is involved in remembering, we are forewarned that it will be leading to something. With his memory of his dreams of them bowing to him, their awareness that he is the one they must be willing to acknowledge as the leader, Joseph sets his plot in motion. <\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Uriel Simon has taught that these passages should be titled \u201cHow Joseph Educated his Brothers\u201d for the memory is put in place to lead to the brothers to re-enact placing one of their own in a pit as they did to him (37:24), but with a decidedly different outcome. The proof of someone\u2019s having done true repentance, according to Maimonides, is for the person to be in the same situation as he was when he sinned and yet not to sin again. Many wonder what Joseph\u2019s motivations for accusing his brothers of being spies and not revealing himself to them are; I believe he wanted to give them a chance to rethink their actions and to change both as individuals and as a group.<\/span><\/p>\n

Joseph\u2019s desire with his memory here, is to impose his interpretation of his dreams upon the lives of his brothers and to enable them to change in the process. It is a complicated plan, and takes two iterations with both Simeon (42:24) being jailed and Benjamin under threat of incarceration (44:12,17) before the brothers are able to plead on behalf of one of their number. But it is Joseph\u2019s remembrance of his dreams that sets his siblings\u2019 instruction in
