A striking humanity emanates from Joseph, specifically in this difficult chapter. At first glance he subjects his brothers to a difficult trial, an almost vicious game. \u00a0He subjects them to cruelty and mean-spiritedness for no good reason. What is supposed to come of this? Here his brothers are finally coming and meet him. They do not recognize him, and who could have predicted his imaginary history and his rise to greatness. They bow to him, trembling like a leaf. And Joseph restrains himself. He does not show his emotions. No muscle betrayed any emotions in his face. He slings at them scathing accusations and imposes harsh demands on them. He almost enjoys seeing them insulted and in real existential distress.<\/span><\/p>\n

I find in Joseph\u2019s current state, an expression of a deep disgust of his own, and mine too, for a fear of authority, and in its wake, compassion for those who suffer from it. This moment is one I have experienced many times in my life, in law firms or in communications systems, in the military hierarchy or in the business world. It is a moment where people change their attitude and efface themselves in front of someone else, only due to another person\u2019s high status, the \u201ctitle\u201d that is added to his or her name (such as \u201cThe Dispenser of Rations,\u201d 42:6), only because it was owed to that person, or because his\/her career is flourishing. God, Joseph must have said to himself as he continues to restrain himself, these men are my flesh and blood? And the brothers just bow their heads. Quivering with fear.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then the moment comes: “He turned away from them and wept” (Genesis 42:24). The human weakness of the sons of Jacob, that which brought them first to sin against him so grievously, is a weakness that touches one\u2019s heart that is now shattering his heart. Joseph turns away from his brother and sheds an unseen tear–as do
