For some people being critical is a status symbol. \u00a0To them, as long as you can find faults in the latest decision of your government \/ The Supreme Court \/ your boss or the doneness of the steak you ordered in the restaurant, you are perceptive and authentic. If these highly critical people were to enter politics, they would be the State Comptroller; if they were to be people of culture, they would be the complaining film critic. \u00a0If they were a sticker, they would be the one accusing everyone of being \u201ccorrupt and despicable.\u201d If they were a word, they would be the word \u201cno.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Joseph sees his brother, remembering the dreams he dreamed and accusing them: “You are spies” (Genesis 42:9). A spy is someone who builds himself up from the weakness of the enemy. The Torah commands us “Do not deal basely with your countrymen” (Leviticus 19:16) because people who gossip, like the spy, build themselves up from harming another. Joseph accuses them of doing the same. You are \u201cno\u201d people, instead of being building yourselves up from the good and the positive in you, you have chosen to rally around one thing, i.e. your hatred of me and my dreams. <\/span><\/p>\n

To this the brothers answer “We are honest men; we have never been spies!” (Genesis 42:31). We are not the same brothers as we were then. We lost a brother, the youngest brother is an orphan from his mother and he has remained with our father who is worried about him. We learned over the years that reality is imperfect enough as it is. One does not have to layer onto it other imperfections. \u00a0We have become “yes” people.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Hebrew, the words for \u201chonest\u201d (ken<\/em> from\u00a0kenut, sincerity)<\/em>\u00a0and for \u201cyes\u201d unite to being the same word. There is a lesson to be learned here: Criticism is perhaps the spotlight but it is not the truth itself. Truth is found where we build up, where reality is unavoidable, where we say ‘yes’.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":62979,"id":62979,"title":"1kings22-yes
