Sarah demands from Abraham that he “Cast out that slave-woman and her son, for the son of that slave shall not share in the inheritance with my son Isaac“ (verse 10). This act is difficult for Abraham; but when Sarah gets support from God who instructs Abraham “whatever Sarah tells you, do as she says, for it is through Isaac that offspring shall be continued for you” (verse 12), the expulsion happens.

Similar to Chapter 16 (when the pregnant Hagar runs away from Sarah), God appears to Hagar who is lost style="font-weight: 400;">The last scene in the chapter is a different story all together. Perhaps it is the continuation of the story of the relationship between Abimelech the King of Gerar and Abraham which is told in Chapter 20. It tells the story of the pact between Abraham and Abimelech that was established via an oath using seven ewes, sheep next to a well, which formed the basis for the name of the place: Beer Sheva (literally “the well of the oath”).

Points to Ponder:

<span
