When they prove to be of no use, Pharaoh sends for Joseph. Joseph is not summoned in the same way, Joseph is hurried to Pharaoh. Why not? Pharaoh is the powerful king and Joseph is the lowly prisoner and slave. To skip to the end of this chapter, Joseph is placed in charge of all Egypt (under Pharaoh) to prepare for the coming famine because Joseph is a dream interpreter favored by God with this ability. Surely there must be others capable of organization in Pharaoh’s administration. The change in Joseph’s status then comes from the change in net power from the beginning of the chapter to the end. A slave has far more net power in relation to Pharaoh if that slave is favored by God with insight and special abilities.

What is net power? Every interaction in Torah and in our lives is more complicated than one party has power and the other does not. Interactions are not based on or influenced by institutional power as much as by net power. In each unique situation there is a weighted net power based on the attributes and also the assumptions of each party.

Joseph’s story in Genesis 41 reminds me of more than the power of God, but of how net power applies in every interaction I have with other human beings. Did someone feel they could stand up to me? Does my experience outweigh the knowledge and education of someone else? These are equations that can be difficult to size up instantly, but I must try to balance the net power of any given situation. Both parties should be humble, considerate, and generous. As I approach the High Holy Days and Yom Kippur in particular, I will not only ask forgiveness for the wrongs I have done to others, but for the times I have not properly considered the net power of my interactions.

"":null
