After twenty-two years and many twists and turns, Joseph and his brothers meet. \u201cAs soon as Joseph saw his brothers, <\/span>he recognised <\/span><\/em>them<\/span><\/i>, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them \u2026 <\/span>Joseph recognised his brothers, but they did not recognise him<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/i>\u201d Joseph was wearing the uniform of an Egyptian of high rank. <\/span><\/p>\n

Previously Pharaoh said to Joseph, \u2018I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt.\u2019 Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his finger and put it on Joseph\u2019s finger. He dressed him in robes of fine linen and put a gold chain round his neck. \u00a0He made him ride in a chariot as his second-in-command, and people shouted before him, \u2018Make way.\u2019 Thus he put him in charge of the whole land of Egypt. (Gen. 41: 41-43)<\/span><\/p>\n

Stories about garments teach that <\/span>things are not necessarily as they seem<\/span><\/em>. Appearances deceive. The Hebrew word for garment, <\/span>b-g-d<\/span><\/em>, is also the Hebrew word for \u201cbetrayal,\u201d as in the confession formula, <\/span>Ashamnu, bagadnu<\/span><\/em>,<\/span><\/i> \u201cWe have been guilty, we have betrayed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Judge by appearances and you will miss the deeper truth about situations and people. You will even miss God Himself, for God cannot be seen, only heard. That is why the primary imperative in Judaism is <\/span>Shema Yisrael<\/span><\/em>, \u201cListen, O Israel,\u201d and why, when we say the first line of the <\/span>Shema<\/span><\/i>, we place our hand over our eyes so that we cannot see.<\/span><\/p>\n

Appearances deceive. Clothes betray.
