{"id":39501,"date":"2018-09-05T16:25:23","date_gmt":"2018-09-05T13:25:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=39501"},"modified":"2022-03-29T20:56:33","modified_gmt":"2022-03-29T17:56:33","slug":"milimilim-the-hebrew-corner-gen-40","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/milimilim-the-hebrew-corner-gen-40\/","title":{"rendered":"MiliMiliM &#8211; The Hebrew Corner &#8211; Gen 40"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[361,405],"acf":{"old_id":"39501","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":34011,"related_cahpter":"40","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"\u05d6\u05db\u05e8 - Zachar - Remember\r\n\r\n","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40:14 &#8211; \u201cBut think of me <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zechartani<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when all is well with you again, and do me the kindness of mentioning me <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hizkartani<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Pharaoh, so as to free me from this place.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40:23 &#8211; Yet the chief cupbearer did not think of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lo zachar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Joseph; he forgot him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A very important Hebrew root appears several times in today\u2019s chapter: \u05d6-\u05db-\u05e8, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">z-ch-r<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cremember.\u201d Joseph asks the cupbearer to remember him when he gets out (here translated \u201cthink of me\u201d), and furthermore to \u201cmention\u201d him to Pharaoh, which uses the same root, in the sense of \u201cto cause to remember, remind.\u201d Later of course we are informed that the cupbearer &#8211; what else? &#8211; forgot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This root is central in Jewish tradition, and coincidentally, during this season, coming up on Rosh Hashanah. In actuality, words based on this root fall into two groups: those related to death, and everything else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A memorial service held at graveside is an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">azkarah. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name of the prayers said several times a year in memory of the departed is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yizkor <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 which means &#8220;He will remember,&#8221; referring to divine consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Referring to a person who is deceased, one can add the acronym <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;zal&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zichrono livrachah, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;may his memory be for a blessing&#8221;. And the rabbinic sages of Talmudic times are collectively known as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cha-zal,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> short for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chachamim <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(&#8220;wise&#8221;), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zichronam (<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">memories, pl.) <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">livrachah <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 sages of blessed memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The general noun <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zikaron <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unites the different nuances of the English terms &#8220;memorial,&#8221; &#8220;remembrance,&#8221; and also &#8220;memory&#8221; &#8211; what one remembers, and how. If you had a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zikaron fenominali, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hebrew for &#8220;phenomenal memory,&#8221; you&#8217;d probably have a vast store of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zichronot, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;memories.&#8221; You may still buy a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mazkeret <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or two (&#8220;souvenir&#8221;) when traveling, but in general you wouldn&#8217;t need any <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tizkoret, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;reminder&#8221; or anyone <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lehazkir, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;to remind&#8221; you of anything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I live in a town in Israel named in memory of James Rothschild by his son the &#8220;generous benefactor,&#8221; Baron Edmond de Rothschild, and so is called Zichron Ya&#8217;akov, using the father&#8217;s Hebrew name. Another town from that era, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mazkeret Batya<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is named after his mother.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Memory&#8221; is the very subjective and collectively transmitted narrative of identity, according to historian Yosef Yerushalmi in his 1982 classic, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zakhor <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(imperative: &#8220;Remember!&#8221;). It is even more important than history in Jewish culture, Yerushalmi avers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We mention, and therefore remember, many things over the holidays this season. There is even an entire section of the Rosh Hashanah service call <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zichronot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some things are remembered, some passively forgotten, and some actively censored or censured. What we choose to include or exclude shapes our &#8220;selves&#8221; and our culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Remember the cupbearer? He ends up remembering: in 41:9 he say\u00a0<em>et chata-ai ani mazkir hayom<\/em>,\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI must make mention today of my offenses&#8230;&#8221; He remembers, mentions (and therefore reminds) and with that statement ends up making repentance as well.
