Pharaoh’s chief cupbearer and chief baker are thrown into the same prison where Joseph serves as a head prisoner. One night the cupbearer and baker dream a dream. Each dream is a different, yet there are similarities. Joseph, who sees that the two are troubled by the fact that they are unable to interpret their dreams, suggests that they share it with him: “Surely God can interpret! Tell me [your dreams]” (verse 8).

The chief cupbearer’s dream consists of the elements of his professional occupation. A vine with three branches that carry grape clusters, which the cupbearer squeezes into Pharaoh’s cup. Joseph’s interpretation is full of hope: in three days the chief cupbearer will be reinstated to his former position in Pharaoh’s house.

The positive interpretation encourages the chief baker to share his own dream. In the dream three baskets on the baker’s head. In the top basket are baked goods and birds started eating the food out of the basket.

Unfortunately, the dream means that in three days’ time the cupbearer will be executed and birds will eat his flesh.

Three days later the two dreams come true. What does not come true?

Joseph asked the cupbearer to work for his release from prison. “Yet the chief cupbearer did not think of Joseph; he forgot him” (verse 23).

Points to Ponder:

Chief officers in the chapter. The chief baker, chief cupbearer, and the chief steward. The baker is Pharaoh’s baker and the cupbearer is responsible for the drinks. But what does the “chief steward” do and why is he in charge of the prison guard? There are interesting interpretations on these questions.

How do you interpret a dream? Joseph states that “God can interpret” (Genesis 40:8), but if you notice the differences between dreams, you will find that behind the interpretation lies a logic that even a human can understand.

Joseph’s testimony. In verse 15, Joseph tells of the double injustice that occurred to him: “For in truth, I was kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews; nor have I done anything here that they should have put me in the dungeon.”

The land of the Hebrews. This is how the land of the patriarchs is referred to in the story. This is also how they call Joseph: a Hebrew. In this way, he is connected to Abram the Hebrew (Chapter 14).

The birthday party is a nice celebration (depending for whom). “On the third day—his birthday—Pharaoh made a banquet for all his officials״ (Genesis 40:20). There is a party, there is a pardon, and there is also a closing of accounts.

Points to
