Never be in a hurry to get up from your seat thinking the show is over, or put the lid on the coffin with a sense of finality until you get to the final picture in the work. The last verse in Genesis Chapter 40 is an example of this. And precisely because it is so anti-climatic &#8220;Yet the chief cupbearer did not think of Joseph; he forgot him&#8221; (Genesis 40:23).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our chapter is chock full of good stuff: the sin of Pharaoh&#8217;s chief officers and their being thrown into prison, their colorful dreams, their solution by Joseph in moments of inspiration, Pharaoh\u2019s fulfillment of those dreams: life for the chief cupbearer and death for the chief baker. Precisely then, after all this dizzying drama, comes the disappointing forgetfulness of the nameless chief cupbearer who, ungratefully and inexplicably, forgets our hero in prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The darkness that remains forces Joseph and us to take a breath and to think. It causes us to recall, for example, the painful lesson about the nature of people, that we truly can never rely on anyone, even someone who has received the best news because of us. \u00a0It leads us to understand that nevertheless, because there is no other choice, we must continue to do the right thing according to the dictates of our conscience, even in the absence of any reward. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It particularly causes us to recognize that at any given moment in time, we know very little, for the full significance of the course of things will only be known in the end.
