When Joseph’s father sent him to Shechem
\n<\/span>To look for his brothers,
\n<\/span>It was the first day of Hanukah.
\n<\/span>As days passed, he would light each evening yet another candle,
\n<\/span>Each flame \u2014 a brother he couldn’t find.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Joseph’s brothers threw him into a pit,
\n<\/span>It was the last day of Hanukah.
\n<\/span>As they sat by the side, eating bread and doughnuts,
\n<\/span>Joseph \u2014 stripped naked \u2014
\n<\/span>Whispered <\/span>Maoz Tzur<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Joseph’s master imprisoned him,
\n<\/span>The slave-boy pulled out eight threads from his loincloth
\n<\/span>And pretending they were candlewicks,
\n<\/span>He blessed them
\n<\/span>On the night of the winter solstice.<\/span><\/p>\n

Joseph, it is your story I envision
\n<\/span>Each winter, your image I gaze at
\n<\/span>Flickering in candlelight, your sheaf
\n<\/span>Standing in my dreams,
\n<\/span>Your voice calling out my name.<\/span><\/p>\n

Joseph, where did you find the strength
