A passage in the Talmud refers to Joseph’s interpretation of his fellow inmates’ dreams: “\u2026R. Eleazar said: Whence do we know that all dreams follow the mouth (of the interpreter)? Because it says (Gen. 41:13) “and it came to pass, as he interpreted to us, so it was” (Berakhot 55b). \u00a0\u2013 The dreamer’s outcome is not determined by the dream itself, but by its interpretation, regardless of the whether it’s the most accurate one, that fits the picture in the dream best.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is Joseph’s interpretation a good demonstration of this principle? The chief cupbearer dreamt of preparing wine and serving it to Pharaoh. Joseph’s interpretation, that he will return to his post, is simply intuitive. There are three vines, and three days later, Pharaoh’s birthday, is famous for reconsidering verdicts. And indeed that’s what happens. Where is the contribution of the interpretation?<\/span><\/p>\n

But look again: \u00a0“On the vine were three branches. It had barely budded, when out came its blossoms and its clusters ripened into grapes\u2026”. In this scene the viewer follows the vine in what appears to represent a full season \u2013 from when it is bare to when it bears fully grown grapes. If the vines have temporal significance, it should be three years, not three days!<\/span><\/p>\n

Interestingly, the chapter began by telling us that the cupbearer and the baker spent a year in prison before the dream (‘<\/span>yamim<\/span><\/i>‘ not preceded by a number in biblical Hebrew, 40:4). The cupbearer forgets Joseph after his release, but remembers exactly two years later, when Pharaoh himself is seeking interpretation \u2013 <\/span>three years<\/span><\/i> after the cupbearer’s landing in prison. It’s possible that the simplest (original?) meaning of the dream was that three seasons of vines meant three years of imprisonment altogether, and release in time to mention Joseph to Pharaoh so Joseph can solve Pharaoh’s dream and rise to power?<\/span><\/p>\n

But Joseph ‘misinterpreted’, probably biased by knowing that three days later was Pharaoh’s birthday, and understandably eager to be set free. Rashi (<\/span>ad loc<\/span><\/i>) indeed critiques him for putting his sole trust in the cupbearer. Perhaps this biased Joseph and lead to misinterpretation of the dream.<\/span><\/p>\n

But, since ‘All dreams follow the mouth’ the cupbearer was released in accord with Joseph’s interpretation.
