He remarks \u201cDo not the interpretation of dreams belong to God?\u201d Is he saying that God supplied him with the interpretation? Possibly. Rabbi Obadiah Sforno, however, suggests that this is not the case. Rather, Joseph was saying that the science of dream interpretation was something within man\u2019s grasp, in so far as he is created <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">b\u2019tzelem Elohim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in the likeness of God, no matter what his station in life might be\u2014i.e. even though he\u2019s a slave and prisoner he\u2019s still endowed with a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzelem Elohim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elohim is the name of God used in the first chapter of Genesis\u2014it expresses God\u2019s dominion over creation; that by His word everything came into being and by His word all is sustained. When humanity is described as being created <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">b\u2019tzelem Elohim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it means that we ourselves are endowed with a creative capacity which can be exercised to shape our own future. Saying that interpretations belong to God is identical with saying that people have been given the capacity to interpret and shape their future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This understanding of our creative potential was also the key to interpreting the dreams. The Chief Butler spoke first, his dream radiated confidence, he was an actor, Pharaoh\u2019s cup was in his hand, he took the cluster of grapes, he squeezed them into his cup, and he placed the cup onto Pharaoh\u2019s hand\u2014he was a creative man with the capacity to shape his future: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">b\u2019tzelem Elohim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>.<\/em> The minister of the bakers was a passive victim. He spoke second, he was clearly more worried by what he saw. In his dream he has no agency whatsoever. The baskets rest on his head, the bird eats from the basket as he does nothing. He was lacking in creative vitality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joseph saw that we can either seal our fate, like the Chief Baker, with passivity and inaction or, we can take our fate in our own hands, exercising our <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzelem Elohim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the choices that are before us when we face tragedy and suffering. We can bemoan the horrible situation we find ourselves in. We can cry out that we are victims\u2014we have been wrongly accused. But that will gain us no sympathy.
