The fated power of dreams rests in their interpretation. In this chapter, the fates of the cupbearer and the chief baker unfold, “just as Joseph had interpreted to them.” The text does not say, “just as their dreams had told them,” but highlights instead the power of interpretation. The Zohar also speaks to this power as it urges us to tell our dreams only to those who love us.

Interpretation, as our chapter illustrates, is a dangerous game.

What is it about the encounter between Joseph and the baker that leads to the baker’s death? In contrast to the cupbearer who eagerly tells Joseph his dream, the baker only tells him his once he hears “how favorably” Joseph interprets the cupbearer’s. The baker’s intuition knew not to tell Joseph his dream, but he abandoned his own truth when he saw the way that Joseph interpreted his friend’s dream. Perhaps he did not trust Joseph to hold his unconscious imaginings with the love they needed, but since his friend trusted him, he overpowers his inner knowing and says no to trusting himself as he forces his mouth to tell the dream. The baker communicates his dream to Joseph from a place of inner-betrayal, and so Joseph’s interpretation narrates the severance of self-trust.

The baker abandoned his inner knowing for someone else’s truth.
