Abba<\/span><\/i>, at night in prison the rats run free.
\n<\/span>I can\u2019t get used to them although I try.
\n<\/span>Sometimes I think resentful stars that hate me
\n<\/span>Turned into rats that bite and make me cry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abba<\/span><\/i>, I tried to say my prayers today,
\n<\/span>But guards took out their whips and hit me hard;
\n<\/span>So once again the only place to pray
\n<\/span>Was our latrine behind the prison yard.<\/span><\/p>\n

All night the rats emerge from beneath the floor;
\n<\/span>How can I hide from rats, or guards who stare
\n<\/span>At me and sometimes, grinning, unlock my door
\n<\/span>To touch my hair, <\/span>Abba<\/span><\/i>, what if they \u2026? \u00a0\u201cHear<\/span><\/p>\n

O Israel, the Lord our God is one.\u201d
\n<\/span>Abba<\/span><\/i>, I shiver. \u00a0I hear the rats run.<\/span><\/p>\n
