{"id":39115,"date":"2018-09-02T13:36:01","date_gmt":"2018-09-02T10:36:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=39115"},"modified":"2022-03-27T21:29:16","modified_gmt":"2022-03-27T18:29:16","slug":"milimilim-the-hebrew-corner-gen-37","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/milimilim-the-hebrew-corner-gen-37\/","title":{"rendered":"MiliMiliM &#8211; The Hebrew Corner &#8211; Gen 37"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[361,560],"acf":{"old_id":"39115","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":34011,"related_cahpter":"37","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"\u05d5\u05d9\u05e9\u05d1 - Vayeshev - Sit\/Settle\r\n\r\n","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">37:1 &#8211; <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vayeshev<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Now Jacob was settled in the land where his father had sojourned, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">megurei aviv<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the land of Canaan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our chapter (and weekly <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parashah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) open with this verse that contrasts Jacob\u2019s settling down, with Isaac\u2019s less than completely settled existence in Canaan, his sojourning. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The root <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y-sh-v<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has meanings including sitting and settling. For instance <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yashav<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em>means &#8220;sat&#8221; in the most general sense. The noun form is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yeshiva<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;sitting,&#8221; and can also refer to a place where Jews sit on their <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yashvanim<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;tuckuses,&#8221; and learn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another form is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yishev<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to &#8220;settle a particular area,&#8221; which gives us <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yishuv<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;settlement.&#8221; In the modern history of the Land of Israel, the &#8220;old Yishuv&#8221; was the small, largely-religious Jewish presence prior to Zionist immigration. The &#8220;new Yishuv&#8221; was created by pioneers who settled the land from the 1880s onwards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members of the new Yishuv initially formed <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moshavot<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0&#8220;villages&#8221; or &#8220;colonies.&#8221; Later waves of pioneers built a more cooperative type of community, the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moshav &#8216;ovdim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or &#8220;workers&#8217; cooperative.&#8221; It is called <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moshav<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for short, although this word is very general and can refer to the seat in your car or a session at a conference. And a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toshav<\/span> <\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is simply a resident of any type of locale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A third form is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hityashev<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em>which means something more like &#8220;settling down&#8221; or the &#8220;settlement process&#8221; in general. Its abstract or collective noun form, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>hityashvut<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">encompasses the rural labor settlements \u2013 moshavim as well as kibbutzim \u2013 around the country<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(But these are not &#8220;the settlements&#8221; that are argued about in the press. For that we have a different root <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ch<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u05e0-\u05d7-\u05dc, meaning to &#8220;possess&#8221; or to &#8220;bequeath&#8221; or &#8220;inherit.&#8221; Someone&#8217;s <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nachala<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is their &#8220;portion&#8221; or &#8220;lot.&#8221; Those settlements \u2013 the ones across the Green Line \u2013 are called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>hitnachluyot<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and those who live there are called <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mitnachlim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These were originally general terms but later came to refer almost exclusively to settlements built after 1967 and the people who build them).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within a few chapters, Jacob will uproot from his settled existence to go down to Egypt. There his descendants will become <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gerim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and \u201csojourn\u201d there for a short while &#8211; only about 400 years.
