Jacob ordered it –
\n<\/span>a wide-sleeved robe of finest linen, striped
\n<\/span>with scarlet, purple and sea-blue –
\n<\/span>from the weaver of sacred curtains –
\n<\/span>and gives it to his favorite son.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

In a mirror,
\n<\/span>the boy sees how it
\n<\/span>rests upon his shoulders,
\n<\/span>feels the smooth fabric against his skin,
\n<\/span>curls his hair,
\n<\/span>and in the fields,
\n<\/span>flaunts the robe before his brothers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHere comes the dreamer!\u201d the brothers call.
\n<\/span>They rip it
\n<\/span>from his back
\n<\/span>but its tear is hushed by Joseph\u2019s cries.
\n<\/span>Ignoring his pleas, the brothers
\n<\/span>thrust his naked body into a pit
\n<\/span>not brimming with soothing water
\n<\/span>but with snakes and scorpions
\n<\/span>and dip the robe into the warm blood
\n<\/span>of a freshly-slaughtered goat.<\/span><\/p>\n

The brothers
\n<\/span>sit and eat, while it
\n<\/span>lies stained
\n<\/span>next to grazing sheep
\n<\/span>and strangers haul the bruised boy
\n<\/span>from the pit.<\/span><\/p>\n

The brothers return it
\n<\/span>to their father,
\n<\/span>and cast it
\n<\/span>before his eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSee, please, whose robe is this,\u201d they say.
\n<\/span>The cloth is ragged and dark blood
\n<\/span>obliterates the stripes
\n<\/span>of scarlet, purple and sea-blue.<\/span><\/p>\n

It lies –
\n<\/span>a desolate heap –
\n<\/span>at Jacob\u2019s feet \u2013<\/span><\/p>\n

and Jacob weeps.<\/span><\/p>\n
