Those were the sons of Esau, who <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yuldu <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em>were born to him in the land of Canaan\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today\u2019s chapter is taken up with the lineage of Esau &#8211; his <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toldot<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here that word is translated as \u201cthe line of,\u201d whereas in chapter 25 &#8211; the beginning of the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parashah<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the weekly portion called Toldot, it is translated thus: \u201cThis is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>toldot<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the story <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Isaac, son of Abraham. Abraham <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">holid <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em>begot Isaac\u201d (25:19). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Either way, the word is from the root <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y-l-d<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>,<\/em> which is gives us words relating to the birthing process. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Believe it or not, there are four verb forms alone related to birth: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yaldah\/teled<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: This is what the mother does (thus these forms are in the feminine): \u201cgives birth.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holid\/yolid<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: This is what the father does (thus the masculine). Here the usual English equivalents are formal, or archaic: \u201cbegets, sires.\u201d Nowadays we just say \u201cfather\u201d as a verb.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nolad\/nolda, yivaled\/tivaled<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u00a0This is what the child does (both masculine and feminine): \u201cis born.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yiled\/yildah, meyaled\/miyaledet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: This is what the helper (midwife &#8211; once exclusively feminine, now both) does: \u201cmidwives, or \u00a0births.\u201d The name of the profession is also \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">miyaled\/et<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d We will meet two famous ones, Shifrah and Puah in a few weeks at the beginning of Exodus.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(For the Hebrew grammar aficionados &#8211; those are the <em>kal (p\u2019al), hif\u2019il, nif\u2019al <\/em>and <em>pi\u2019el<\/em> forms respectively).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s just the verbs. This is an incredibly rich root for nouns and adjectives as well:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>yeled\/yaldah<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; boy\/girl (the plural can mean \u201cchildren\u201d).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>yaldut<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; childhood<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>yalduti<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; childish<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>leidah<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; birth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>mulad<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; inborn, genetic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>huledet<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; birthday (who is the only person who has a birthday in Tanakh?
