Talkin\u2019 about a revelation: this is the first time that this this key Hebrew concept appears – \u00a0God\u2019s revelation. For this momentous first, it\u2019s interesting to note that the verb here is in the plural. The name of God, which is often plural in form (<\/span>elohim, adonai<\/em> <\/span>are both grammatically plural in Hebrew) rarely takes a plural verb (Genesis 1:26 being a famous exception). Commentators explain the rare plural here by pointing out that the revelation that was referred to – Jacob\u2019s ladder – uniquely contained flights of angels. I guess everyone got in on the celestial act.<\/span><\/p>\n

More generally, in Hebrew, revelation has something in common with postcards, incest, birthright, and explorers. They all are variations on one root, g-l-h<\/em>. This root gives us a family of words, which has the basic meaning of “uncover” or “discover,” but can also mean “reveal, disclose, expose or explore.”<\/span><\/p>\n

A revelation, whether divine or otherwise, is referred to in contemporary Hebrew as <\/span>hitgalut<\/span><\/em>, something which has been “revealed,” or “uncovered.”<\/span><\/p>\n

One ancient coinage that still has currency today is the Hebrew term for “incest” \u2013 <\/span>gilui ‘arayot<\/span><\/em> \u2013 literally “uncovering the nakedness” of one’s close kin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Young American Jews come to “discover” Israel on a specially designed 10-day tour called in English “Birthright” and in Hebrew,<\/span> Taglit<\/span><\/em>. Meaning “discovery,” this is also the word for scientific breakthroughs and other types of \u201cEurekas!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A “birthrighter” may make many discoveries during their revelatory week here, and if they’re a little old fashioned and don’t tweet their exploits, they might write home about them on a postcard, in Hebrew, <\/span>gluyah<\/span><\/em>. This simply means “revealed” or “uncovered,” for as opposed to a letter in an envelope, on a postcard the words are exposed for all to see.<\/span><\/p>\n

Interestingly, the active verb form <\/span>legalot<\/em> <\/span>can be used to describe two actions which are very different in English. If I know something and share it with you, I have “revealed” it. But if I don’t know something, and find it out for myself, I have “discovered” it. Hebrew doesn’t distinguish between the two, using <\/span>legalot<\/span><\/em> for both.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus, a child who knows a secret, and refuses to tell, no matter how much he is implored, will petulantly say:<\/span> lo megaleh<\/span><\/em>! “I won’t ‘tell’!” And the great explorers who sailed the globe in the 16th and 17th centuries are called <\/span>megalei ‘olam<\/span><\/em>, “those who discovered the world.”<\/span><\/p>\n
